Midnight Party Baby

October 10, 2010

Lately, Lorelei has been going down for the night around 6 and waking up to eat anywhere between 11 and 2. Usually she eats with dispatch – sometimes her eyes don’t even open; I think it’s some kind of baby sleep-eating thing – and goes right back to sleep for a few more hours.

Last night, she didn’t wake up until 2:30. When I went upstairs to get her, she started flailing her arms and legs around, giving me a big smile and a delighted, Howard-Dean-esque squeal. It was a very enthusiastic reception; I felt a little like Justin Bieber. But I also knew there was no way she was going to eat and slip quietly back to sleep. We’d taken her to an Irish pub for dinner, and clearly all the craic had gotten her fired up.

I brought her back to bed with me and Eric. She was wide awake for about an hour, and it was pretty entertaining. One of the baby books says that you should always mimic the noises your baby makes, as it makes the baby “feel important.” This pretty much cracked us up, but we find ourselves doing it anyway. She’s started doing this thing where she sucks in her lower lip and grunts like Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade, and she and Eric got a good back-and-forth going. They eventually started jointly grunting the first few bars of “Smoke on the Water.”

My family is completely nuts. But in a good way.
