“We’re Pregnant!”

January 12, 2010

This has always been a pet peeve of mine; does it get to anyone else?

While “We’re having a baby” and “We’re going to be parents” (even “We’re expecting,” in the sweetly euphemistic 1950s parlance) are completely valid, “we” are not jointly experiencing incapacitating nausea, random-yet-dire cravings for the Pillsbury cinnamon rolls in the breakaway tube, ill-fitting pants, migrating belly buttons, coaster-sized nipples, gas in quantities sufficient to power a mid-size city, and swollen you-name-it. And if “we” are, one of us needs to see his doctor – pronto.
