No News Is Good News

December 30, 2009

I went to my ob/gyn today for my regular monthly appointment and was in and out of there in less than 15 minutes. They really have the routine down: Pee in the Dixie cup, arm out for the blood pressure cuff, hop on the scale, belly goop and doppler heartbeat check. Done. They are nothing if not efficient. I suppose it’s wishful thinking to assume that they’ll be able to hustle the labor process along with such expediency.

The one thing that slowed us down by maybe 30 seconds was that the doc had a bit of trouble locating the Olive, who is apparently taking full advantage of this narrow window where he or she is sufficiently developed to move around but still small enough to have quite a bit of room to roam. I wonder if by 8 months the kid starts to think, “You know, I really need to think about getting a bigger place – it seemed so spacious when I first moved in.”

In two weeks we have an ultrasound and will find out the baby’s sex, which we’re very excited about. This is assuming, of course, that the Olive cooperates – I have a friend whose baby defiantly mooned them for the duration of the entire ultrasound; they left as uninformed as they’d arrived and received a lot of yellow and green onesies at their shower. Another friend found out she was having a girl, but only after the ultrasound tech pounded on her belly several times – with a level of force that was perhaps unwarranted – to make the baby to turn around.

They’ve told me to arrive for the procedure with a full bladder, so I hope there won’t be too much pounding (which could well lead to unscheduled peeing outside the established confines of the Dixie cup).
